AUTO AUCTIONS: TRUTHS ABOUT TRANSPORT

As an industry leader in auto transport, we work with a lot of customers who purchase from auctions. According to the National Auto Auction Association, its membership numbers 345 across North America, with combined sales of 9.2 million vehicles annually.

That’s a lot of auctions, and an awful lot of vehicles requiring transport.

If your organization has never worked with an auto auction before, here are a few things you should keep in mind when ordering transport.

Misconceptions
Auctions are big, bustling enterprises so it’s natural to assume some details might fall through the cracks. The average NAAA member operates a full-service, seven-lane facility on 70-plus acres of land, and has over 130 employees.

You might assume that you can pick up your purchased vehicles after you are confirmed as the highest bidder. That’s not the case. Auctions will not release your vehicles until they are fully paid for. Confirm that the auction has received your check for payment before sending in your transport provider.

Even after payment is confirmed, you might think the pickup process is quick and easy. Most of the time it’s uneventful, but sometimes vehicles get misplaced, resulting in extra hours searching for the right ones. This could result in a transportation delay. Your transport provider should keep you apprised of the status of the shipment, including any unforeseen delays.

Tips for transport
You should have a direct contact in Dealer Services at the auction who can assist if any problems arise.

All vehicles must have a gate pass before leaving the premises. These are often stamped and barcoded. Make sure your transport provider has all gate passes for the vehicles you acquired.

If a Post Sales Inspection (PSI) was purchased, make sure your transport provider knows, and make sure to give them a date of when the vehicle will be ready. There’s no use for the trucker to be waiting around while the inspection is still taking place.
